COLLEGE STATION, Tex – (KBTX) A Texas A&M librarian received a special honor from President Barack Obama.

Mr. Obama has appointed Rebecca Hankins to serve as a member of the National Historical Publications and Records Commission.

She will now serve on the commission to help preserve and publish documents that relate to United States history.

Hankins has worked at Texas A&M University Libraries since 2003 as an associate professor, archivist and curator.

She says it was a surprise to hear from the White House.

“On December 6th they sent me an email saying he was appointing me to this commission and it was really like an out of body experience because how does your name get in front of the president. So it was a real honor,” said Hankins.

Hankins says she will continue with her regular work while serving on the commission
